The Importance of Makeup Primer

 

Okay, so hopefully most of you know, but for those who don’t – there are a bunch of reasons why a good primer is essential to your makeup routine. Primer acts as a layer between your skin and your foundation meaning that it will even out any imperfections, almost like giving yourself a second skin, and because of that barrier between the skin and the foundation it helps prevent your foundation sweating into your pores and clogging them.

If you think about your makeup the same way an artist thinks about their painting, you ideally want a blank canvas to work with. Beginning with a blemished canvas is going to affect the quality of the painting at the end.

Neither of us have ever had perfect skin by any means, so primer is the step that gives us a blank canvas to work with. The more imperfections you take care of with your primer before you actually apply your makeup, the less wizardry you have to do on your face to make it look good.

Unfortunately there isn’t an abundance of scar filling or acne smoothing primers, though there is the odd one about, if you’re willing to spend up, which isn’t ideal if you’re using the product daily.

What there IS fortunately an abundance of, is wrinkle smoothing, line filling, and pore filling primers which ultimately serve the same purpose. 

If acne scarring is an issue for you, a line or pore filling primer will similarly fill and smooth over any indents from scarring.

If active acne or spots are an issue, then a thicker primer will be beneficial, and also a green tinted primer to offset any redness that you may have.

If melting makeup is a problem, which it is for a lot of girls, mattifying primers are the way forward. If you can find a good one, these types of primers contain ingredients that will soak up any oiliness that would otherwise transfer straight to your foundation.

From our experience, high end makeup primers are superior to most things you can get at the drugstore, though that doesn’t mean that you can’t get an awesome drugstore primer either. We save our expensive primers for important events, going out, or just a really bad skin day. For every day use, cheaper alternatives still work brilliantly.
